As I was reading through Job this morning, one particular verse of Scripture jumped off of the page. Job, in this passage, is conversing with his friend, Elihu. After listening to Job’s moaning over his present suffering, Elihu charged him with Moses’s sin, of speaking unadvisedly with his lips when his spirit was provoked. Elihu said, “So Job opens his mouth with empty talk; without knowledge he multiplies words.”
Job 35:16 (NIV)
I had to stop and ask myself, “Am I, too, sometimes guilty of opening my mouth with empty talk; without knowledge, do I just keep multiplying my words?”
As I was pondering that thought, I turned to read Proverbs 13:3 (NIV)
“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
Proverbs 10:19 (NIV) tells us, “Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.”
My Personal Musings From God’s Word:
May we not fill our lives multiplying our words, and doing so with little knowledge, thus resulting in “empty talk.” But, rather let us guard our lips, for the words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.
